The District of Columbia’s main post office had become obsolete and over-burdened by the volume of mail coming into the nation’s capital for processing – in excess of 16 billion pieces annually. After a highly competitive national bidding process launched by the U.S. Postal Service and the National Capital Planning Commission, the development rights were awarded for the creation of a new mail facility.

The General Mail Facility is a $100 million complex that serves as the central mail bulk handling facility for the U.S. Postal Service. The development team assembled the project’s required 38.6 acres of land on behalf of the Postal Service, and constructed the 660,000 square foot facility under budget and 18 months ahead of schedule, while keeping this major facility within the boundaries of the District of Columbia, a key goal in the original procurement.

The new facility provides state-of-the-art technology and mail handling equipment on a single floor. Today, Postal Service officials tout the facility as a significant contribution to the improvement of the region’s mail processing and delivery.
